Dealing with the handicap of a glass (ceramic) top Stove. Suggestions?
Where I’m living for the next 5 months or so has a glass (or ceramic, or what I refer to as EVIL) top stove. WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THESE THINGS?
It’s as if no one knows or cares to learn how to cook, and someone said, "hey, lets make a stove to market to those people… it’ll be sleek, and we’ll convince them that it’s safer". Notice how in those advantages there’s no consideration for usefulness. And cleaning this thing makes removing rust from bare metal seem novice.
The fact that I can’t use cast iron on the cook top makes me want to cry sometimes. I bought a plug-in (travel) burner that’s just like the old-style electric burners. After using that for a while I decided to buy a propane camping burner as well (a bit more expensive, but worth it)
SO I have the cast iron problem solved, kind of. Unfortunately nothing COMPARES to a real gas stove, even the 100 year old one at my cabin!
Does anyone have any gadgets or tricks they use so that they can utilize these stupid machines? I mean not being able to use a copper bottom pan is one thing, but not being able to use a griddle that fits over 2 burners makes cooking breakfast for large crowds just depressing!
I heard someone suggest using a heat-diffuser. When I heard that I narrowed my eyes and said "Those aren’t for use on the stove top!"… they insisted that they’ve used one for months on their ceramic top and have had no problems. If you know of what they refer to, please point me to it! I would love it if they had something of that nature for electric stoves. I’ve seen retail items labeled "heat-diffuser" before, but they’re usually just overpriced cooling racks, or one that I saw was for a gas stove, NOT CERAMIC or electric.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on what you’ve done to cope. I’m so sorry for all of the real cooks out there who have had to deal with these menacing machines.
